How did we make our choice?

Buying a gaming screen is not trivial, as this element influences your gaming experience. The number of models on the market makes the choice complicated because their characteristics are varied.

So that you don't get lost on the way, we have defined some important markers to guide you:

The panel: this is the central element of your display. There are three types: IPS focuses on image quality, TN on responsiveness and finally VA aims to balance the two. The maximum brightness, the contrast and the ranges of colors covered are also data to be taken into account because these physical capacities impact the final rendering.

Resolution : The most common resolution is full HD (1920 x 1080 px) but in gaming, a higher resolution is preferable. Currently, the best compromise is the QuadHD (2560 x 1440 px). However, you need to have a powerful GPU to get the most out of it. 4K resolution is intended for screens of at least 27 ”. If this type of display interests you, we invite you to visit our dedicated comparison .

Calibration: the rendering is adjusted when it leaves the factory by the manufacturer. It can be changed by the user. The colorimetry (maximum delta E: 3), gammas (reference to 2.2) and color temperature (reference to 6500K) are the main data. Most gamers are happy with the factory settings. It is therefore important that this setting be as efficient as possible, even if the most picky can use a probe to push the optimization to the maximum.

HDR: with this technology, the maximum brightness is tripled compared to SDR. Displaying multiple levels of light intensity in a single image helps add depth to the screen. This results in a more realistic rendering. The whites are therefore brighter, the blacks deeper.

Response time : this value represents the time that elapses between the emission of a signal and its display on the screen. TN panels advertise a responsiveness of 1 millisecond where other types struggle to drop below 4. Above 5 milliseconds, the difference can start to be seen in play. A minimum value is really important for a shooter, where you can't afford any delay in the game.

The refresh rate and afterglow: the first criterion corresponds to the number of images per second that the panel is capable of displaying. The higher this data, the smoother the animation. The second designates the time that an image actually takes to disappear once it has been displayed. “Ghosting” appears when this duration is too long. This creates a rather unpleasant blur effect in the game.

Ergonomics: to make the most of your long gaming sessions, your comfort is important. The screen support in particular must have access to a maximum of settings to avoid stiff necks, reflections and other inconveniences. Height, inclination, rotation and pivot must be adapted. Access to parameters also deserves your attention: some buttons may be poorly placed or not very responsive. In our view, the best option is to use a clickable “joystick”.

The connection: it must be as complete as possible. Currently, it is essential to have HDMI (to be combined with the right cable ), DisplayPorts and USB. In the case of 4K screens or high refresh rates, the latest standards are rigorous as the data transfer is significant.

Compatibility: some screens can only be configured via a dedicated application. In this sense, you have to make sure that your hardware has access to this software to be able to make the most of your display. It often happens that these programs are limited to a single operating system which can quickly become problematic.

After going through numerous tests carried out on the Internet, analyzing the technical sheet of each product, consulting the opinions of French and English speaking users while ensuring the legitimacy of these comments, we were able to determine which are the 5 best PC gaming screens. from the moment.

Samsung C27HG70

Dive deeper into all your games with this precise and responsive curved screen. Thanks to HDR, the realism is even more advanced and the feeling of immersion much more present.

A curved screen, responsive and precise, what do you think? The CHG70 series is made up of two models (27 or 32 ” ). Both are very effective, whether thanks to their responsiveness, their display quality or even their ergonomics. Whether you are an amateur or a veteran, it will suit all your tasks.

Its panel is a curved QHD VA (1800R) equipped with QLED (Quantum Dot) technology. Thanks to this combination, the colors are rich and faithful (delta E 2.1), the blacks are deep (gamma at 2.3) and the contrast is higher (3000: 1).

HDR is also part of the game for an even more realistic rendering. Maximum brightness helps in this sense (956 nits) although it seems like the screen only manages to go up to around 600 nits in HDR.

Who says display quality can't rhyme with responsiveness? Samsung has rolled up its sleeves and offers results rarely seen on this technology with a response time of 1 ms while the average is rather between 4 and 5. This very low value combined with the refresh rate of 144 Hz are beneficial. with overall fluidity, which will delight FPS fans.

With all these good points, you will surely want to spend long hours in your favorite virtual worlds… And this is where the ergonomics come in. In the case of this screen, everything is adjustable, whether it is the height, the inclination, the position on the foot or the orientation of the screen. Be sure to have a fairly deep desk, however, because the support is quite large: about 30 cm deep for the 27 ”and almost 40 for the 32”.

Moreover, if you spend many hours with your eyes riveted in front of your screen, choosing anti-blue light glasses could prevent eye fatigue.

The connection is quite classic: 1 DisplayPort, 2 HDMI (2.0), 2 USB 3.0 (fast charge compatible), 1 microphone input and one output.

In the end, if you need a screen, it's one of the CHG70. They are totally versatile and offer excellent value for money. They are also compatible with home consoles, computers and can even be connected to other screens.

AOC 27G2U

This screen represents the very best at this price point. It combines a very good adaptability with an efficient calibration to offer you many games, in all fluidity.

The AOC 27G2U combines everything you could want in a gaming monitor, for a small budget. Thus, it ticks all the boxes in our buying guide by offering efficient calibration out of the box while not neglecting ergonomics and fluidity thanks to its high refresh rate. It has, as a bonus, a well-supplied connector that allows it to be connected to a large number of devices.

This monitor has a 27 ”IPS FHD panel. Its colorimetry is very good with a delta E of 2.4, gamma of 2 and a color temperature quite close to our benchmark value. The contrast is good enough for IPS with a value of 1250: 1.

The fluidity is not neglected so far with a refresh rate that rises to 144 Hz. The responsiveness is just as interesting with a response time of barely 1 ms. The screen is also compatible with G-Sync and FreeSync.

The 27G2U will not be the most difficult to integrate into your setup either, thanks to its sober and discreet design which takes the opposite view of its competitors. Only a few touches of red remain. It can be adjusted on 3 levels: the height (13 cm), the inclination (from - 3.5 ° to + 21.5 °) and the rotation on the stand (+/- 30 °). It offers, as a bonus, the possibility of placing it in portrait position.

The various settings pass through a button system. Coupled with a somewhat outdated OSD, they are not very functional. Fortunately, you won't have to change your settings every day!

The connection, finally, is fairly standard but astonishes by the number of ports. Thus, we are entitled to 2 HDMI, 1 DisplayPort, 1 VGA, a 3.5 jack input and output and no less than 4 USB 3.0 ports! Compatibility with 100 × 100 VESA brackets is also planned.

A fairly narrow cable gland is integrated into the stand so that you can easily store your various connections, facing down.

Samsung CHG90

Intended for fans of extraordinary screens, this model offers a real immersion experience with its oversized panel. As a bonus, it offers careful calibration and flawless fluidity.

Speaking of larger formats… A 49 ”screen, do you like it? This is what Samsung offers with its CHG90. It combines extremely deep immersion, great responsiveness and high quality in a rather massive volume. Remember to provide space and a solid desk because it still weighs 15 kg.

Just like on our mid-range, Samsung chose a curved VA QLED panel (1800R) but this time based on a Full HD resolution in 32: 9. In other words, using this product is equivalent to using 2 27 ”FHD screens side by side.

The colorimetry is as neat as ever and the results speak for themselves: a delta E of 2.1, a gamma curve at 2.3 and a temperature close to the benchmark value.

HDR is well served by high contrast (3000: 1) but the brightness lags a bit (300 nits). The result is therefore mixed, even if the rendering is rather flattering.

The gaming experience is immersive, fluid and devoid of latency, thanks to a response time of less than 1 ms and a refresh rate of 144 Hz. Its dimensions and curve make it ideal for racing games, but the picture is a little distorted with the shooting games. In general, it is still versatile.

A joystick allows you to navigate between the menus and make your personal adjustments (brightness, colorimetry, etc.). However, the lack of built-in speakers is lacking for its price.

In terms of connectivity, it has 1 DisplayPort, 1 mini DisplayPort, 2 USB 3.0, 2 HDMI, an audio output and a headphone output. The design of the device is intended to hide cables.

Regarding compatibility, it supports HDR10 and 3D format, just as it works with FreeSync technology.

With this screen, Samsung protects your eyes and saves you from nasty headaches by avoiding the use of PWM which can give the feeling of flickering. Compared to its competitors, its energy consumption remains correct.

In the end, the Samsung CHG90 is a panoramic curved screen that offers all gamers an immersive and smooth gaming experience. Its compatibility and versatility will offer you a multitude of possibilities, without tiring your eyes. A real war machine!

If you prefer to go for a QHD solution, the Samsung CRG90 is its equivalent in this resolution.

BenQ Zowie XL2546

If you are aiming for scoring, it may be interesting to turn to this model focusing above all on its fluidity so that you do not miss any action.

Taking up the torch of the very good XL2540 , this model offers pleasant display quality and exceptional fluidity thanks to its high refresh rate. The calibration out of the box is not ideal but a few adjustments allow the bar to be quickly straightened to obtain very correct values.

The XL2546 is equipped with a TN 24.5 ”FHD panel. Although the display quality is satisfactory, it will be necessary to deal with a very poor calibration. Indeed, the figures speak for themselves: gamma at 1.7, a temperature at 7620 K and a delta E at 9.6! Suffice to say that the FPS1 mode is not recommended if you want good image fidelity.

Fortunately, a passage through the parameters allows to rebalance the whole quite easily thanks to the integrated buttons .. or the remote control, even more practical.

Too bad because the other data is very good with a frequency of 240 Hz and a response time of 1 ms! The brand here relies on pure refreshing which allows great freedom at the GPU level. There is also the DyAC technology, specific to BenQ, which inserts black images in order to play with retinal persistence and therefore improve the sharpness of moving images.

The design focuses on sobriety with light touches of red. It is clearly oriented towards competitive players by integrating screens on the sides to minimize the risk of distraction. In this sense, it also has a PVC transport cover.

The ergonomics are therefore neat with a mat panel, little subject to reflections, and many settings available: height (14 cm), tilt (- 5 ° to + 20 °), rotation on stand (+/- 45 °) and same portrait mode. Small additions complete this attractive picture: a marker is present to mark your preferred height and a retractable arm allows you to put down your headphones.

The connection is fairly standard and placed under the screen. There is a DisplayPort, 2 HDMI, 1 DVI, 2 USB 2.0 and 3 3.5 jack ports (2 inputs and 1 output).

Asus ROG Swift PG279Q

This screen is faithful to the brand's standards by presenting an excellent overall quality, favored by a successful calibration and a foolproof fluidity as long as you have the appropriate equipment.

Asus quality never ceases to impress us with the ROG PG279Q. This 27 ”screen features an IPS panel fitted with an anti-glare filter. Between its excellent calibration in racing mode, its high refresh rate and fluidity, it has everything to please. It only tilts due to the lack of HDR and its low maximum brightness.

It benefits from a significant inclination (25 °), an adjustable foot over 12 cm in height, a possibility of rotation of 120 ° as well as good viewing angles (178 ° on each side). So you have all the cards in hand to find the best position facing the screen.

On the connectivity side, you have an HDMI input (improvement over the previous model), a DisplayPort, a headphone output and two USB 3.0 ports. Therefore, you can connect it to a computer as well as a game console. To navigate between menus or make settings, there is a red joystick and four buttons. Also note the integration of speakers.

The resolution of 2560 x 1440 px, displays excellent image quality. The colors are beautiful and correctly reproduced (average Delta of 2.3), and the graphics are impressive. Even if the contrast ratio is 1157: 1, the brightness can still be improved. Some users have noticed light leaking from the corners of the screen and some irregularities can be seen.

The response time (4 ms) and the maximum refresh rate (165 Hz) provide good responsiveness and rock-solid stability. These values as well as the presence of G-Sync technology lead us to say that it is a good model for gaming since it adapts to all games, even the most demanding.

Finally, this PC screen aims to reduce eye fatigue as much as possible to promote user comfort. With its 132 W / m² of consumption, it is just below average in terms of energy expenditure.

In short, the Asus Rog PG279Q is energy efficient and ergonomic thanks to its many orientation possibilities. It presents an excellent resolution panel that does not affect your eyes and above all, which faithfully reproduces colors. Its responsiveness allows us to affirm that it is a perfect model for gamers.

Honorable mentions

Asus TUF VG27AQ (€ 479.99 when published): cousin of our high-end alternative, it has very good qualities. Unlike the PG279Q, it is more geared towards reactivity than display beauty. It displays a frequency of 165 Hz on the meter and a response time of 1 ms. However, the calibration is not optimal and could be improved. We did not choose it because of this flaw.

Asus ROG Strix XG17AHPE (499.99 € at publication): this screen is equipped with a 17.3 ”FHD IPS panel clocked at 240 Hz. It offers a response time of 3 ms which allows it to deliver great results for your games. But its real particularity ... is that it is designed for portable use! Thus, it is equipped with a 7800 mAh battery which gives it an autonomy of nearly 3 hours, regardless of the platform thanks to its extensive connectivity.

Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ (€ 2,794.99 at time of publication): this gamer screen is a compendium of the best. Looking to the future, it acts as a UFO effectively combining HDR, high refresh rate (up to 144 Hz) and 4K resolution. It's simple, it is currently impossible to push it to its limits. However, you will have to deal with a very steep bill, common for early-adopters.
