Best PC Controller

After 11 hours of research among 30 recognized models on the market, we believe that the best option is the Microsoft Xbox One (V3) .

Microsoft Xbox One (V3)

This controller is a reference in ergonomics. It not only has a good quality of finish but also responsive keys and efficient enough to guarantee its reliability with any type of game.

It retains the appreciable properties of the 360 such as ergonomics and playing comfort. It brings, in addition, improvements such as the new more practical directional cross or the vibrating triggers for a good dose of immersion. The latest version brings Bluetooth connectivity and an even more refined grip thanks to a better grip and fully activated slice keys.

8Bitdo SN30 Pro (wired)

With a design that will make you nostalgic for the 90s, this gaming accessory is lightweight and compatible with different platforms. As a bonus, it modernizes a recognized format by adding current features.

The most attractive about the 8BitDo SN30 Pro is its flat design, worthy of the 90s. Compared to previous decades, this one has been modernized with the appearance of joysticks and extended compatibility. Too bad the ergonomics are tarnished by the lack of handles. A wireless version is also available for those allergic to cables.

Microsoft Xbox Elite Series 2

Take a benchmark controller and add some deep customization to it to get this model. Intended for experienced players, it pushes the optimization further for maximum comfort, regardless of the duration of use.

The Xbox Elite Series 2 is a very sophisticated controller, especially thanks to its interchangeable buttons. As a bonus, you can create your own profiles via the dedicated application to configure the sensitivity of the different components. Just like the model on which it is based, the Series 2 always gives you comfort and support, being even better than the previous version.

Logitech F310

The only wired controller in our ranking, it is intended to be versatile while being pleasant to use. This is a very good introduction for those who want to equip themselves at a low price.

With a light weight and a good grip, this controller is quite ergonomic. It comes in a small format at a democratic price. After an automatic configuration, you will enjoy many games, recent or older, thanks to its wide compatibility. It is unfortunately not at the level of our best cheap model because of the absence of vibrations, its thread and its perfectible quality of finish.

Sony DualShock 4 v2

Evolution of the famous Dualshock, this version benefits from reworked ergonomics, extended connectivity and good build quality. As a bonus, its lack of latency guarantees high responsiveness, no matter the game.

Although it seems less efficient than its competitor, the second version of the DualShock 4 still sets the bar very high. Lightweight and built with good materials, it conforms to the shape of the hand and offers good grip. However, its autonomy is a little too weak to really take advantage of wireless.

Nacon Revolution Unlimited Pro

This controller combines precision and customization with additional keys configurable via the dedicated software. Its comfort is added to its other qualities which make it a model worthy of experienced players.

Designed in collaboration with esports professionals, this controller is certified by Sony as an official model. It is not only pleasant to use but also precise and fully configurable. Despite some minor flaws, such as its battery life and unusual handling, it presents a good alternative for PC gamers who also have a Sony console.

How did we make our choice?

The search for the perfect playmate is not an easy thing and we often find ourselves hesitating between recognized models and affordable products of a more obscure origin.

To help you find a choice that meets your budget, we have determined the following criteria:

Ergonomics: so that you get the most out of your gaming sessions without having to stop because of hand pain, it is important to dwell on this point. The grip must be natural without requiring improbable positions of your fingers to be effective. In this sense, the placement of the buttons and the size of the controller also have their impact. We strongly advise you to bet on this point rather than an interesting design.

Integrated controls: directly linked to ergonomics, this criterion represents the number of buttons available, their responsiveness and their size. Ancillary functions are also important. Thus, if the majority of controllers have joysticks , some do not. Others incorporate a gyroscope and an accelerometer for motion capture, a turbo function or even vibrating triggers. Determine what your needs are before making your choice, and always think about your intended use.

Connectivity and compatibility : wired or wireless, a controller must be connected to a device. It must of course be compatible with your controller so that you can enjoy it in your games. The best solution in our eyes is Bluetooth for its versatility. However, on the other hand, the latency is slightly higher than with a radio signal or a cable. The models we offer are all compatible with Windows and some add console, MacOS and sometimes even Android compatibility.

Build quality and design : these are more important for the durability of your device, especially if you want to transport it regularly. Logically, the more you go upmarket, the more the overall quality is felt ... even if we can sometimes be positively surprised by the entry level. On the design side, it's all about taste. Generally, the choice of color is the only criterion independent of the model.

In the end, on the basis of these criteria, we were able to reduce our list to around ten products. Reading numerous tests and user reviews, both French and English, allowed us to compose our selection with the 6 products that are offered in this article.

Microsoft Xbox One (V3)

This controller is a reference in ergonomics. It not only has a good quality of finish but also responsive keys and efficient enough to guarantee its reliability with any type of game.

This controller retains the advantages of the 360 by bringing improvements such as the new directional cross, more practical, or the vibrating triggers. As a bonus, the latest version brings Bluetooth connectivity and an even more refined handling thanks to a better grip and fully activated slice keys.

Its ergonomics, precisely, is considered by many as a benchmark in the field. Its asymmetrical design allows efficient use of all the keys without risking your fingers knocking.

Thus, the diameter of the joysticks has been reduced to promote use with the fingertips, reinforced by their concave shape. The size of the edge keys has been increased in order to allow a more varied grip. In addition, V3 makes the LB and RB keys fully clickable.

The grip in itself is also optimized: the handles fit well in the palm, a non-slip surface is present on the back of the device and on the top of the sticks.

In terms of functions, we find the traditional buttons, nothing atypical at this level with the exception of the LT and RT triggers which have their own vibration system, ideal for immersion. The quality is still there with a good precision of the sticks and the clickable directional cross, well damped and sufficiently resistant triggers and keys with the correct rebound.

The controller can be connected in 3 ways: via the USB cable (which also allows the connection of a live headset), via Bluetooth or via the radio signal (for Xbox or via a dedicated dongle for PC ). It is compatible with Windows and the various Xboxes. Some users mention the possibility of connecting with other devices using bluetooth (but there is no official confirmation in this regard).

On the design and quality side, we are faced with a product worthy of Microsoft, with neat finishes and a choice of materials accordingly. It is available in many colors and, if you wish, Microsoft provides you with a space on its site to fully customize it to your tastes . Be careful, the price of course evolves accordingly.

In the end, this controller is a reference in ergonomics. It not only has a good quality of finish but also responsive keys and efficient enough to guarantee its reliability with any type of game.

A wireless version is also available.

If you're riding the retrogaming wave or using a Nintendo Switch, you've surely heard of this builder. It takes the design of the vintage controllers after having slightly adapted it.

As a result, the feeling when using the SN30 Pro is quite authentic and it is easy to believe that an official model is used as the quality is present. The only difference at this level comes from its thickness, which is slightly higher. She is therefore a little less suitable for small hands than her grandmother.

The modernization of the whole also required an adaptation of the positioning of the keys. Thus, in addition to the usual controls, you will find: 2 joysticks, 2 additional slice buttons and 2 buttons on the lower part of the front panel (star and home). These buttons are a very handy addition to all current games and their variety of shortcuts. However, FPS / TPS enthusiasts will be a little disappointed because the lack of grips does not promote good use of joysticks. The SN30 Pro + corrects this problem, however.

Overall, the feeling is, once again, close to the original model: thick, dry and responsive buttons and a precise directional cross even if it is a little rigid. It is also ideal for platform games. The set also includes a gyroscope and an accelerometer.

You can use Bluetooth or the supplied USB-C cable for the connection. In wireless mode, its battery life is approximately 15 hours.

The wired version connects via USB. It is compatible with Windows (7 or higher), Nintendo Switch, Steam and Raspberry Pi. The wireless version adds support for D-Input (Android and old Windows games) and MacOS.

The latter is available in 3 colors, one in reference to the European SNES, one to the US version and even one to the first Gameboy !

Microsoft Xbox Elite Series 2

Take a benchmark controller and add some deep customization to it to get this model. Intended for experienced players, it pushes the optimization further for maximum comfort, regardless of the duration of use.

The Xbox Elite Series 2 is a very sophisticated controller, in particular thanks to its interchangeable buttons. As a bonus, you can create your own profiles via the dedicated application to configure the sensitivity of the different elements, for example. Just like the model on which it is based, the Series 2 always gives you comfort and support, being even better than its previous version.

Its format is also relatively similar. You can always customize the buttons using the different sticks provided. On the other hand, the Series 2 is heavier with a weight of 345 g, but this is a classic characteristic of more sophisticated models. This controller is made from soft-touch plastic and luxurious materials that provide a comfortable grip for long gaming sessions.

At the level of the keys, nothing unusual except the presence of 4 triggers on the bottom of the controller. They can be assigned to an action via the dedicated program.

The biggest visual change comes instead from the new directional cross which presents a design at the very least original with an unusual shape replacing the traditional format. Fans of precision have the option of replacing it with a more classic model, supplied with the controller.

Other customization possibilities are available to you: the triggers located on the bottom of the controller are removable and 4 alternative sticks are provided. Their resistance is also adjustable using a key.

All these keys can be configured via the “Xbox Accessories” application (Windows 10), which is easy to use. It offers many features to put the gamer in the best possible conditions thanks, in particular, to the 3 programmable profiles. However, if you want to have access to this app, you will need a Windows account.

Like the others, it can be connected in wired mode with a long 2.7 m cable or with Bluetooth. The Wi-Fi Direct mode is also available which makes it compatible with the future console of the brand, the Series X. In wireless, its autonomy is 40 hours, a very good result when compared to the competition . Note, however, that the battery cannot be removed.

In the end, the Xbox Elite Series 2 is the ultimate controller for performance and optimization enthusiasts.

It is unfortunately not at the level of our best cheap model because of the absence of vibrations and its thread.

Let's start first with its ergonomics, clearly inspired by the Sony Dualshock 3. It is light and pleasant to use and will not disturb the majority of users too much. However, it has the same flaw as the latter: when the joysticks are both oriented towards the center, the fingertips can collide which can be quite uncomfortable, especially for large hands.

At the level of the keys, the observation is the same, the usual keys are present but badged, this time, according to those of Microsoft (ABXY). The only peculiarity that deserves to be mentioned is the 4-way directional cross which is very precise and which will delight lovers of platform games. On the other hand, no integrated vibration system. If it is essential for you, we invite you to upgrade to the next model, the F710 which, as a bonus, has wireless connectivity.

For connectivity, you are entitled to Windows (D-Input and X-Input), MacOS, Linux and Android TV. The controller is plug & play and works with a good library of games. For older people who do not support joysticks, you have a button to reverse directional cross and left joystick to still enjoy this additional comfort.

The concessions were especially made on the choice of materials: the feeling of robustness is weak because of the plastic coating and the lightness of the whole. In addition, several users note a certain fragility of the joysticks.

Lighter (218 g) and compact than the Xbox controller, it is however less ergonomic because of its less worked form and its symmetrical organization, less efficient. It will not disturb those used to the brand's controllers because the feeling remains similar. It also corrects the defect of the previous version which could cause some discomfort to large hands.

Its performance is based around its 8 action buttons, the touchpad and its 2 concave joysticks, which incidentally benefit from a material different from the first version to deteriorate less quickly. The directional cross is quite precise and flexible for skill games. On the other hand, the triggers, although sufficiently precise, are a little difficult to access because they are quite small.

Its plastic design promises a relatively soft touch that allows a good grip, although it is a little less comfortable than the Xbox. It also has a built-in speaker as well as an audio input and output (the sound quality of which leaves a little to be desired).

Two options are available to you in terms of connectivity with either wireless or wired. But for the latter, know that the cable is not supplied with. The wireless connection with the console has been optimized to its maximum to offer minimum latency (close to wired), despite the use of Bluetooth. It also displays Windows, Mac and mobile compatibility.

Its big weak point is its autonomy. With only 6 to 8 hours of resistance, it is far from its competitor, which is five times more efficient at this level.

It exists in no less than 13 colors and new ones are added regularly. The build quality is up from the first version with a new choice of material for the joysticks.

In the end, this evolution of the famous Dualshock benefits from reworked ergonomics, extended connectivity and good build quality. As a bonus, its lack of latency guarantees high responsiveness, no matter the game.

Its 224 g give it the lightness necessary for good comfort and the arrangement of the elements of the controller has been designed to facilitate the task and the access to the players. Pleasant to handle and soft to the touch, it opts for an asymmetrical layout, much more ergonomic. The sticks have a non-slip coating which is still slightly slippery in use.

The set of keys is sensitive and precise while the analog triggers are adjustable. On the other hand, the size of the Share and Options buttons is a bit small, as is the touchpad. However, their use is secondary.

And since we are on a “Pro” controller, we are entitled to four additional buttons (M1 to M4), which are integrated into the handles. Their use takes time to adapt, but they are very useful once you get used to them.

Connectivity level, you have the choice between a mode with a 3 m long cable or wireless using the dongle provided. The latter uses Bluetooth but further optimizes the connection with the device by halving the latency compared to a classic dualshock controller.

It binds to the PS4 or to a Windows PC. The dedicated program allows the creation of four profiles that can be used via Advanced mode. Nacon pushes the customization even further by providing weights to weigh down the controller, interchangeable joystick heads (convex or concave) and different bases for the sticks to adjust the activation amplitude (30 °, 38 ° (PS4 standard ) and 48 ° (PS3)).

In the end, the Nacon Revolution Pro is a competitor to be reckoned with, even if Microsoft continues to dominate.

Honorable mentions

SteelSeries Stratus Duo (€ 79.94 at publication): With a sober design, this controller offers a pleasant gaming experience thanks to its efficient and precise triggers. Its correct weight makes it comfortable to hold. In Bluetooth mode, its battery has a respectable autonomy of 20 hours. Unfortunately, although it is compatible with Windows and Android, we must be wary of iOS, where it does not work with all games.

Valve Steam Controller (€ 129.90 at publication): The Steam Controller is a different controller. For her, no directional pad or second joystick but rather a duo of touchpads. They allow it a very high precision while giving it access to features hitherto unusable with a controller. You can adapt it according to your needs thanks to the settings present in its dedicated application. It is designed to work with Windows, MacOS, Linux and Android.
